Subtraction Math Game Ideas

“Math Magician” is a subtraction math game that involves using mathematical manipulatives and a dishtowel. The game must be demonstrated first before students are divided into teams to play it on their own. Start by putting some manipulatives onto a classroom table that the whole class can see. Use a strange magician voice for announcing how many items are on the table. Use a dishcloth to cover these items and get a few of them from the surface.

Say some magic words and show cool gestures then remove the dishcloth so the new number of items will be revealed. Challenge players to figure out the number of objects kept in your hand, according to how many are left on the table. For instance, if you put ten items on the classroom table and only three were left when the cloth was lifted, players would use subtraction to find out that there are seven items you are holding.

Alternatively, you can use red and green grapes to come up with a mathematical subtraction game for your students. Provide ten grapes for each student and have them separate their grapes by color then count how many grapes they get of every color.

Now, ask the students to combine the ten grapes together again, eat three grapes and count the remaining ones. Therefore, they would write 10-3=7 on the blackboard. Repeat this step until they eat all the grapes. This cool math game is suitable for kindergarten children in terms of the level of difficulty.
