Creating Mathematical Games

When creating math games, you need to take note of your goals. Record what you want students to practice or learn from the game. For example, you may use a certain game to develop their multiplication or division skills. Decide on the style of your game. Make sure that you selected style is already familiar to you and your students alike. For instance, you may base your own game on other existing math games like Candy Land, Gin Rummy and Memory.

Set your game goals. If you make an adaptation of the Memory game and would like players to practice facts on division, then the goal of the game is to match their quotients with division sentences till you get the most matches.

Make the parts and pieces for the game. If possible, make use of playing cards, to add another version of the Candy Land game board or Gin Rummy, for instance, for which the cards can be changed to stand for mathematical facts and match them with the colors of the board. Markers and index cards can be used for creating the game cards, and markers and poster board for your game board. You can have these pieces laminated to ensure greater durability. The rules of the game must be specified, based on the preferences and capabilities of students.
